I posted this under "Griffins Talk" because at the time, we were affiliated with the Sens and many of these guys cut their teeth here in GR. Plus, I really like the "steal of the draft" at the end. He was pretty tough on Chouinard and Bala.
Looking back at the 1998 Entry Draft .
Today @ 11:55 AM ET
On this beautiful Civic Holiday here in Canada I am taking a look back at the 1998 Entry Draft. What a year it was for Ottawa. Lets take a look at the ten players selected in 1998 by the Senators.
1st rd.(15th) - Mathieu Chouinard(G) - As I spoke about two days ago, the Senators selected Chouinard twice, the first being in '98. Terrible draft pick.
2nd rd.(44th) - Mike Fisher(C) - A fabulous pick by Ottawa! One of the heart and soul players on the Sens roster. Many say he will be a future captain.
2nd rd.(58th) - Chris Bala(LW) - Bala bounced around the AHL and played the last two seasons in the ECHL. He did not come close to living up to expectations.
3rd rd.(74th) - Julien Vauclair(D) - He has played the last 3 years in the Swiss A League.
4th rd. (101st) - Petr Schastlivy(LW) - Schastlivy was given many opportunities to grow in the Sens organization. Many fans grew tired of his work ethic. He has played the last 3 years in Russia.
5th rd.(130th) - Gavin McLeod(D) - After completing his junior career, McLeod played at the University of Alberta for 5 years.
6th rd. (161st) - Chris Neil(RW) - Neil just completed his fifth season with the Senators and has been a very consistent player for Ottawa. What a steal in the 6th round! Brings character and grit night in and out.
7th rd. (188th) - Michel Periard(D) - He has been a career minor-leaguer.
8th rd. (223rd) - Sergei Verenkin(F) - Listed as a forward, he retired from the Russian League in 2001-02.
9th rd.(246th) - Rastislav Pavlikovsky - Currently plays in the Swiss A League.
I will give this draft a B. Fisher and Neil are huge contributors to the Senators and have the ability to be Senators for life with Chris Phillips and Daniel Alfredsson being the others. Yes the Senators drafted some complete busts in 1998 but getting the likes of Fisher and Neil who are mainstays on the 2nd and 3rd lines makes this a very successful draft year.
A few names that were selected in the mid rounds by other teams and have gone on to solid careers in the NHL include Jaroslav Spacek in the 5th round and Shawn Horcoff in the 4th round. The 3rd round had three really nice picks in Brad Richards, Erik Cole and Brian Gionta.
Notables that were taken late in this draft include Karlis Skrastins in the 9th round, Michael Ryder in the 8th round, Tyler Arnason in the 7th round, Andrei Markov in the 6th round and of course the steal of the entire draft Pavel Datsyuk was taken 171st overall in the 6th round.
Tomorrow I am going to take a look back at the 1997 Entry Draft. Without cheating, what round did the Senators select Karel Rachunek?
