Wings add prospect goalie Pelletier to camp roster; Koopmans may retire Posted by George James Malik July 01, 2007 14:40PM
The Red Wings have invited former Yotes draft pick (59th overall, 2005) Pier-Olivier Pelletier to both prospect camps to attempt to shore up their goaltending:
July 1, RedWingsCentral: The Red Wings have invited the former Phoenix Coyotes draft choice to a development camp starting Thursday at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Pelletier will also compete in the Red Wings' annual prospects tournament and training camp in August and September in Traverse City, Mich.
Pelletier, a former member of Canada's under-18 team, spent the past few seasons with the Drummondville Voltigeurs and was among the top goaltenders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season.
The 20-year-old went 29-18 in 51 starts and finished fourth in the QMJHL with a 2.97 goals-against average, while posting one shutout and a .901 save percentage.
Pelletier will help the Red Wings overcome two significant losses in terms of goaltending depth:
Stefan Liv and Logan Koopmans are currently restricted free agents, but Liv has signed with HV-71 of the Swedish Elite League and Koopmans' career -- spent mostly in the East Coast Hockey League -- has been ravaged by injuries and retirement is believed to be a possibility.

Koopmans should retire. I'd rather have an unproven rookie like Pelletier than Koopmans. Pelletier was a 2nd round pick just like Jimmy was so he's got talent. Everything I've read about him leads me to believe he's a solid goalie prospect. How he slipped through the 'Yotes fingers is a mystery to me. I still feel the Wings should go after some established goalies as well though.

...How he slipped through the 'Yotes fingers is a mystery to me. Brian It also seems to be a mystery to the Great Whine and their management team. Man, that organIzation has sifted out a lot of talent over the years. (Oh, and sorry, coyote. Nothing personal, eh? )

The Wings signed Adam Berkhoel today. ECHL success but hasn't been able to have much AHL success. He does have more potential than Koopmans though.
