It was good to see real hockey again. I thought the Wings showed good speed and some of their cycling was excellent. Man, when Datsyuk and Zetterberg are on the ice together, that is something to behold.
I thought Rafalski was going to have a less than stellar opener when immediately after the opening faceoff he lost an edge and goes down behind the net. Fortunately, Anaheim could not convert the opportunity. But he sure made up for it the rest of the night. How'd you like his passing and puck movement on the PP?
I liked the jump Kronwall showed, too. He jumped into a couple of plays and threw his weight around as he usually does. Geez, I hope he stays healthy this year.
I also thought Pronger was up to his usual crap. What a steaming stool on skates. A perfect captain for this collection of cheapshot artists. Nice to see Drake go after Perry. But did anybody else get really PO'd when Drake undid his helmet and motioned/told Perry to lose his lid, but of course the punk did not.
So Drake's helmet comes off immediately and he has to try to land haymakers under Perry's helmet AND visor! I still say the NHL needs to have a rule requiring helmet removal for fights. Of course, Buttman will not acknowledge that their is even fighting in the NHL, so there ya go. Plus, isn't there some rule about fighting with a visor? Or is that only instigating while wearing a visor?
Anyway, it was great to watch Homer getting under Pronger's skin again all night long. VS even showed Captain Pinhead complaining to the refs and talking on the bench after being schooled by Homer. And how great was it to see a typical Holmstrom PP goal while that nob was sitting in the box? Priceless.
They outshot 'em 42-15, out hit 'em, out skated them, just flat-out out played them, but still had to settle for the hated shootout. In typical fashion I again did not watch the SO but I hear Hudler's move was excellent. So the Wings get the 2 points they deserved and Anaheim gets the Buttman point. Oh well.
And my laugh of the night came when watching the news on channel 8 last night. When going to the commercial break before the sports report, Susan Geha says, "and Jack Dole will tell us if the Wings shot down the Dicks". She got it right.
The only downside, 3,000 empty seats. For a Wings Opener!!??!?
Hey, has anyone heard if our Griffin opener is approaching a sellout? I hope it is.
Anyway, great to have hockey back.
