According to the Vancouver and Manitoba media, Flaherty was put on waivers. He'll be assigned to the Moose if he's unclaimed by noon today (10/05). Flats has still not decided if he'll go to Manitoba though. He signed with Vancouver because he was given a shot to be Luongo's backup. Now that Sabourin is there Flats may want to look elsewhere or retire. The Canucks have said they'll give him time to consider his options.
Right now Manitoba has 3 goalies, Drew, Julien Ellis and Mike Ayers. Maxime Ouellette is overseas. The Canucks didn't want to re-sign him. If Flats decides to go to Manitoba then Ellis will most likely go to the Victoria Salmon Kings (ECHL). Ayers is up in the air. Arniel really likes Drew and they plan on 40 to 45 games from him this year even when/if Flaherty returns. If Flaherty decides to retire, Arniel is comfortable with Drew as the #1 in Manitoba.
Drew will not be the odd man out.

Thanks for that information Brian, it's nice to see that Drew is getting the opportunity he deserves. I feel sorry for Flats though...it would be sad to see him retire, he is a hell of a goaltender.

Flaherty cleared waivers but is taking until next week to decide what he's going to do next. The GM of the Moose doesn't think Flats will retire though. Drew was expecting either Flats or another goalie to be coming to Manitoba. He was happy to hear Sabourin was signed because they were teammates in Sherbrooke.
Mike Ayers was released from his PTO by the Moose.

"LOL...if he beats us then he laughs about it with us after games:) We'll still love him."
What's this 'we' crap, grudes? I don't love him, never did.
I still think when push comes to shove, with all the goalies the Canucks are accumulating, Drew will be odd man out again.

Thats fine 5er, that message was actually meant for two certain people and they both know who they are. I never meant to include you in that but I'm flattered that you thought I was including you:)

The term 'we' in this instance would imply all members of this particular board. I like Drew, but he keeps getting himself in these situations where he is (at least it appears to me) not in a good position, regardless of how he plays. Vancouver now has, Luongo, Sabourin, Ouellet and Flaherty along with Drew. I know you and some others would pick over 3 of those guys but that is a pick with the heart.
Besides, I was joking....guess it's a good thing Titleist hadn't posted here, eh?

Maybe but the Manitoba coach sure seems high on Drew and wants him to play so at least Drew's got that in his corner. Ouellet isn't even in the country nor on the continent last time I checked so unless video goaltending has been implemented I don't think he factors in. Now they have Ellis down there as well 5Hole and right now it's Ellis and Drew. Flaherty still has to decide if Manitoba is what he wants...He hasn't reported there yet, so right now he's not a factor either.

With Luongo on board it's doubtful any of these guys will see much, if any, significant NHL time.
Vancouver will be looking to Corey Schneider from BC, Julien Ellis and Alexandre Vincent as the heirs apparent to Luongo.
Schneider is Vancouver's "Howard". He decided to return to BC but could turn pro after this season. Vancouver has said they'd prefer he stay in college but a lot depends on how he does this season. If he has a huge year then he may sign with Vancouver this summer.
Ellis came to camp out of shape and did not impress during camp. He's looked out of place in the AHL. Much like Drew did his first season in GR. It's expected, coming from Junior to the AHL is a big step. He'll be better prepared after a season in the ECHL.
Vincent is back in Juniors.
Sabourin will collect his 450K for charting shots. He'll see maybe 15 to 20 games. And if he tanks it during those games then Flaherty will be back in Vancouver. Assuming he decides to keep playing.
Drew needs to prove himself at the AHL level. Manitoba is giving him that chance and he's doing well so far. He has gotten excellent reviews for his play during his first 2 games. But right now all he's proven is that he's an excellent ECHL goalie. In a must win situation I'd still take Flaherty or Sabourin over Drew based on experience. They both have proven themselves at the AHL level.
With a strong season Drew could be in contention for a spot with the Canucks which is more than he could have hoped for with Detroit. He was the last goalie cut from camp and he impressed Vigneault with his work ethic. They feel he has a lot of potential.
Time will tell.

I don't disagree with anything you posted, Brian. So with the guys currently with the 'nucks and the heirs apparent, that puts him at about 8 on the chart. Too bad. My personal feeling is (and I don't have anything to back it up) is that unless Drew is AHL goalie of the year, he doesn't stand much of a chance, regardless of how the Moose coach feels about him. I've read most the reviews and for the most part, Drew deserves the things written about but there's along way to go. I don't think it will take much of a slip up to see him move down.

That goes the same for Howard and Liv this season...Especially Jimmy; if he's out played by Liv he very well could lose his starting job position in Grand Rapids. Personally I hope they put Liv in for the Toronto game on Friday; be nice to see how he fairs against the Marlies.

Jimmy losing his starting position in GR? Now I think that's where I have to disagree with you GW. Jimmy is the Wings Poster Child, the "future of the team"...no way in hell is he going to lose his starting job regardless of how bad he plays. So I think this is where we disagree:)
And 5er, sorry for the misunderstanding. My post was almost meant as a joke but I have been told that at times I say things that people might not take as a joke. So I'm sorry if you didn't take it in that context:)

Not if he tanks it Grudes. Last year the competition was Drew and as we know the Wings weren't high on him...They are high on Stefan though. Now one game does not make a season but Liv definitely had a much better game than Jimmy. It will be interesting to see how Stefan fairs against some of the more tougher teams we'll face. There is the chance of him out playing Jimmy though and getting the more games; this year GR's got two goals Detroit is very high on. As well the Red Wings brass was not impressed with Howard showing up to the prospect camp out of shape...Strike one for this season.
